The Background
for the observer waiting to be seen. You're the lonely one, the lovely one nobody seems to notice standing at the edges, the one who scans the crowd and finds proof everywhere that everyone belongs to someone except you.
You watch them run into open arms, watch reunions unfold like scenes from movies you were never cast in, watch lovers collide in airports and train stations while you linger in the empty space between all that joy, invisible in your solitude.
You've become an expert observer, fluent in the language of other people's happiness, watching from the sidelines as the world pairs off two by two like some ark you missed boarding.
You're the quiet one in every photograph, the background character in a story that keeps casting everyone else as the lead, the one people forget to ask “but what about you?”
You linger in doorways, in the space between hellos and goodbyes, watching love happen to everyone but you, wondering what it is that makes you so easy to overlook, so easy to leave standing alone in crowds that swallow everyone else into pairs.
But maybe being the observer isn't the tragedy you think it is.
Maybe there's something in the noticing, something in being the one who sees the tenderness everyone else is too busy living to witness.
Maybe you're not missing the moment, maybe you're the only one who's actually watching it happen, the only one who understands how rare, how beautiful, how fragile all that love in the crowd really is.
You're not invisible. You're just still waiting for someone to look back.
